Liver biopsy is performed in suspected patients with negative molecular analysis and ambiguous laboratory results; in addition, it may be used to assess the degree of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis and the degree of iron liver overload [ 3, 48 ]. The lower jaw is abnormally small (micrognathia), the tongue is displaced downwards (glossoptosis), and there is an abnormal opening in the roof of the mouth (cleft soft palate). The disorder is characterized by incoordination, poor judgment of movements (sensory ataxia), and absence of reflexes (areflexia) of the lower legs and, eventually, the hands; weakness and degeneration (atrophy) of muscles of the lower legs; abnormally high arches of the feet with increased extension of the toes (pes cavus or "clawfoot"); and tremors of the hands.
