Thirty-six black men and five white men are charged with treason and conspiracy under the federal 1850 Fugitive Slave Law and brought to trial in federal court at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Because the slave states essentially were in between the northern states and the territories, if the Union had lost the territories would probably have become slave territories/states of the confederacy. Joseph Hooker, consisted of seven corps of infantry and artillery, a cavalry corps under Alfred Pleasonton, and an Artillery Reserve, for a combined strength of more than 90,000 men. Gettysburg was the deadliest battle of the war, with ~50,000 deaths.
