Vorenberg's book is an interesting, detailed (although not mind-numbingly so) book about the adoption and the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, which is pretty much what the story of "Lincoln" is about. These advantages widened rapidly during the war, as the Northern economy grew, and Confederate territory shrank and its economy weakened. The act called for several companies to build the railroad: from the west, the Central Pacific and the Nevada Central; and from the east, the newly-chartered Union Pacific.
